  Jean-Pierre - Consultant in Project Management at GIAT Industries

My father, a Regional Director for a large industrial company once said to me, "Service provision is a very precarious sector ". I'm convinced that the opposite is true. Consultancy is a pretty secure field, as there is always an immediate opportunity to correct oneself and there is no risk of being cut off from changes taking place in the world of work.

I started my career in a large group where I learnt a lot, but where I was very disappointed by the amount of competition that existed between colleagues.

Things are completely different at ETOP International. The C.E.O. is approachable, and colleagues are partners you can contact directly.

ETOP International is a different kind of company, with strong added value. Regular meetings allow us to benefit from the experiences of others, through the presentation of different missions or with the building of KME*. We all have something to gain from each other's successes, but also from our failures, which always show us where we can improve.

Relationships with clients are also easier. We offer them support, new working methods and knowledge of related sectors that they had not always taken into account.

Since the start of my placement at GIAT Industries about 6 months ago, I have encountered elaborate project management tools and a team who were professional but whose motivation was sometimes lacking. Together with a number of my colleagues, we have been able to bring a new dynamism to the team. Through our work, we have improved the skills of some of the staff. Since there was no sense of competition, our remarks and advice have been more easily accepted.

Since my mission at GIAT Industries is on a contractual basis, ETOP International only fulfils its results commitments if I provide a number of contractual documents monthly (Reporting, schedule, etc.). This means that both parties have to be precise where the definition of tasks is concerned. Such a well-defined position means a certain amount of autonomy in organisational terms.

KME = Knowledge Management Etop - Methodology document built around missions, covering project management, for consultants.

André - Consultant in Project Management at AXA France Assurance

That's usually how it is in our line of business: first, one mission, just to see how it goes!

My mission involves an operational coaching programme on piloting and co-ordinating a strategic project that is particularly sensitive for the client. In fact, it is a short, 2-month mission aimed at showing that methods recognised in complex industrial projects can be feasibly and usefully applied in the tertiary sector. We are there to-
structure: who does what and who is responsible for what;
communicate in order to anticipate: plan objectives and identify risks;
oversee the different players and the action plans daily: defining milestones and measuring physical progress;
structures experiments so as to learn and capitalise on this for operation in multi-project mode.

Experiment, experiment! !

"We've got metres of cupboard space full of methodologies and recommendations, but there are unusable as they are; mentalities are just not ready for it! " explained the client.

So how do we implement project management methodology in a cultural background that has yet to be exploited?

It is above all an experimental phase with project teams who have no methodological reference in project management.
" They are two kinds of conductor, those who have the score in their head and those who have their head in the score" A.Toscanini used to say!
The know-how therefore has to be built up, through exchange and personal coaching on the application of a simple methodological document. In this case, the Project Management Plan was chosen as an operational guide **.
This individual and group coaching enables us to "clear the professional landscape" for each individual. Improving know-how also helps participants to learn how to react in difficult situations. It is the start of a continuous improvement process, through a series of small victories.
Feedback on the experiment is the most important thing. Such is the commitment we have undertaken.

Continually calling oneself into question

In this context, as is generally true, the human factor prevails over methodology. The consultant therefore needs to be extremely rigorous in his methods and should provide a daily synthesis of best practices linked to his own experience. Using a large dose of pragmatism, working with project leaders who all have their own character, the best solutions will need to be adapted to the situation on the day. .
ETOP International's consultants are backed up in their actions by a management team which shares this vision, making it a line for development.
The company ensures a rigorous selection procedure to select consultants with the right profile, and who have this capacity for constantly calling themselves into question as well as a desire to continuously capitalise on what they have learnt.
What we recommend and practice with our clients is also applied to ourselves!
